This formula is similar to \textit{explicit formulae} in number theory, where a counting function is expressed through a sum parametrized by the zeroes of an analytic function (here the eigenvalues and the Selberg zeta function) plus a small error term. The formula is established under the hypothesis of sufficient separation on the length spectrum, a hypothesis which is valid in case \(F\) is uniformized by an arithmetic quaternionic group. The proof is based on the Selberg trace formula for conveniently chosen test functions. | |||
