This book introduces structural dynamics with focus on some engineering structures that can be described as line-like beam or beam-column systems, or as systems of rectangular plates. The presentation contains classical analytical models as well as a description in discrete finite element format, covering the mathematical development from basic assumptions to final equations suitable for practical predictions. The author makes the general assumption that the structural behaviour is linear elastic and that the nonlinear parts of the relationships between stresses, strains and displacements may be disregarded. The solutions are presented in time domain and in frequency domain. The numerical methods given in the book contain eigenvalue calculations of continuous systems, frequency and time domain response calculations, normal mode method, dynamic response to earthquake excitation, wind induced dynamic response calculations and finite element method in dynamics. The theoretical methods include the problem of loads moving on a beam, the theory of tuned mass damper, and the Kirchhoff-Love theory of thin plates. | |||
