This paper is a leading advance in the structure and representation theory of torsion-free Abelian groups. The topic is notoriously difficult and previously significant results have been obtained mostly in the finite rank case, and more especially for almost completely decomposable (acd) groups, that is, those containing a completely decomposable subgroup of finite index. In this paper, the authors have succeeded in extending these results to a class of torsion-free groups of infinite rank, namely epimorphic images of local acd groups. In particular, they describe numerical near-isomorphism invariants for this class of groups. The paper is densely written, and the results too technical to describe here. It suffices to say that the paper is essential reading for those contemplating research in the area.
