Let \(k\) be an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic \(p\). Let \(D\) be a \(p\)-divisible group over \(k\). The isomorphism number \(n_D\) of \(D\) is the smallest non-negative integer such that the isomorphism type of \(D\) is determined by \(D[p^{n_D}]\). The isogeny cutoff \(b_D\) is the smallest non-negative integer such that the isogeny type of \(D\) is determined by \(D[p^{b_D}]\). It is clear that \(b_D \leq n_D\). The subject paper gives an optimal upper of \(n_D\) and \(b_D\) using the Newton polygon of \(D\). The optimal upper of \(n_D\) provides a corrected version of Traverso's conjecture of \(n_D\). Let \(c\) be the codimension of \(D\). and \(\nu\) be the Newton polygon of \(D\). The paper shows that \(b_D \leq j(\nu)\) where \(j(\nu)\) is defined to be \(\nu(c)+1\) if \((c,\nu(c))\) is a breakpoint of \(\nu\) or \(\lceil \nu(c) \rceil\) if otherwise. The inequality \(b_D \leq j(\nu)\) is an equality when \(a_D := \mathrm{dim}_k(\mathrm{Hom}(\alpha_p,D)) \leq 1\). When \(D\) is not an ordinary \(p\)-divisible group, the paper shows that \(n_D \leq \lfloor 2\nu(v) \rfloor\) and in the case of isoclinic \(p\)-divisible groups, there exists a \(D\) such that \(n_D = \lfloor 2cd/(c+d) \rfloor\).
