Let \({\mathcal H }\) be a complex Hilbert space, and \(A_1,\dots, A_N\) be bounded self-adjoint operators in \({\mathcal H}\) such that \(A_iA_j\) is compact for any \(i\neq j\). In the article under review, some necessary and sufficient conditions are given for \(0\) not to belong to the essential spectrum of the sum of \(A_i\), \(i=1,\dots, N\). For any \(\varepsilon\geq 0\), let \({\mathcal H}_{\varepsilon}\) denote the subspace of \({\mathcal H}\) defined as \[ {\mathcal H}_{\varepsilon}=\bigcap\limits_{i=1}^N\operatorname{Ran}(E_{A_i}[-\varepsilon, \varepsilon]), \] where \(E_{A_i}[-\varepsilon, \varepsilon]\) is the projection valued spectral measure of \(A_i\). The author proves that \(0\) is contained in the essential spectrum of \(\sum A_i\) if and only if, for any \(\varepsilon\), the subspace \({\mathcal H}_{\varepsilon}\) is infinite dimensional. | |||
