The authors consider a class of second-order nonlinear evolution equations in a real Hilbert space. Under suitable growth and coercivity hypotheses, they show that any solution has bounded or precompact range. These results enable them to prove an abstract convergence result, and to derive the existence of almost periodic solutions. In the process, the authors generalize earlier results by \textit{I. Ben Hassen} and \textit{L. Chergui} [J. Dyn. Differ. Equations 23, No. 2, 315--332 (2011; Zbl 1228.35148)], and \textit{L. Chergui} [J. Dyn. Differ. Equations 20, No. 3, 643--652 (2008; Zbl 1167.34017), J. Evol. Equ. 9, No. 2, 405--418 (2009; Zbl 1239.35098)]. Applications to partial differential equations with nonlocal damping terms are included.
