Let \(R = k[x_1,\ldots,x_c]\) be a polynomial ring over an infinite field \(k\), and let \(A = R/I\) be an Artinian standard graded algebra over \(k\). The authors prove existence and uniqueness of a Hilbert function \(H_A^{\mathrm{gen}}\) such that \(H_{A_{\ell}} = H_A^{\mathrm{gen}}\) for a generic \(\ell \in R_1\), where \(A_{\ell} := A/\ell A = R/(I+(\ell))\). In analogy, they show that there exists a unique graded Betti sequence \(\beta^{\mathrm{gen}}\) such that \(\beta_{\ell} = \beta^{\mathrm{gen}}\) for generic linear forms \(\ell \in R_1\). Both these generic objects satisfy minimality conditions. In the second part of the paper the authors focus on algebras \(A\) as above which additionally have the Weak Lefschetz Property (WLP), and on quotients by WL linear forms \(\ell\). Under these assumptions they prove relations between the graded Betti numbers \(\beta_{ij}^R(A)\) and \(\beta_{ij}^{R_{\ell}}(A_{\ell})\). For example they show that \(\beta_{ij}^R(A) = \beta_{ij}^{R_{\ell}}(A_{\ell})\) for all \(i \geq 0\) and \(j \leq t+i-1\), for a fixed \(t\) depending only on \(A\). Starting from this results, and in analogy with the WLP, they define the \(\beta\)-WLP for \(A\). When \(A\) has the \(\beta\)-WLP and \(\ell\) is a generic linear form, the Betti numbers of \(A_\ell\) are determined by those of \(A\). Finally, they introduce the weaker notion of \(\beta_0\)-WLP, for which only the first Betti number of \(A_\ell\) is determined by that of \(A\), and they provide several examples. | |||
