Substitutions are a powerful tool to generate a large number of nonperiodic structures. Surveying a vast list of sources, the authors of the paper under review analyze the concept of a dual substitution for distinct concepts of substitutions (for words, tilings, etc.) and discuss various connections between the different notions of word or tile substitution. Restricting themselves to the case of two letters or two tiles in dimension one, they show that the most common notions of the dual of a substitution are equivalent. Also necessary and sufficient conditions for substitutions being selfdual are obtained in this case. | |||
