The semi-discrete numerical schemes for the approximation of the one-dimensional periodic Vlasov-Poisson system are constructed. The methods are based on the coupling of discontinuous Galerkin approximation to the Vlasov equation and several finite element (conforming, non-conforming and mixed) approximations for the Poisson problem. The paper is organized as follows. The Section 1 is introduction. The main properties of the continuous problem are described in Section 2. The notations are introduced and some basic results for the description and analysis of the numerical methods are also revised in Section 2. In Section 3, the numerical methods proposed to approximate the one dimensional periodic Vlasov-Poisson system are presented. The error analysis for the presented methods is detailed in Section 4. The energy conservation properties of the schemes are discussed in Section 5. The paper is completed with an Appendix containing some proofs of technical and auxiliary lemmas used in the convergence analysis.
