Many nice topological groups are special Schwartz groups. There is a Schwartz group which is not a special Schwartz group. It is shown that the class of special Schwartz groups is a Hausdorff variety that coincides with the Hausdorff variety generated by all abelian locally \(k_{\omega}\) groups. The paper contains five interesting open problems.
