A new series of Beauville surfaces is constructed whose groups are 2-groups of order at least 256. By two reasons the construction is particularly interesting. First, the groups are quotients of the fundamental group of a certain 2-dimensional simplicial complex. Second, they provide an infinite series of Beauville surfaces of (the rare) mixed type, that is, isogenous to a square of an algebraic curve.
