The author considers the following Weierstrass equation: \[ y^2+txy=x^3+(p_0+p_1t+p_2t^2)x+q_0+q_1t+q_2t^2+t^3 \] for fixed \(p_i\) and \(q_j\), as an elliptic curve over the field \(F(t)\), as an elliptic surface over the field \(F\), and as a cubic surface in \(\mathbb{P}^3_F\), where \(F=\mathbb{Q}(p_0,p_1,p_2,q_0,q_1,q_2)\). He shows that the surfaces define a multiplicatively excellent family of surfaces with Galois group isomorphic to the Weyl group \(W(E_6)\). The precise meaning of this is somewhat technical, but includes the fact that if \(\{p_0,p_1,p_2,q_0,q_1,q_2\}\) is algebraically independent over \(\mathbb{Q}\), then the Galois group of the splitting field of the Mordell-Weil group of the elliptic surface associated to \(\{p_0,p_1,p_2,q_0,q_1,q_2\}\) over \(F\) is isomorphic to \(W(E_6)\). The author also describes some applications of this result to constructing examples of elliptic surfaces with specified Galois structure. | |||
