\textit{G. Zhang} [J. Differ. Geom. 53, No. 1, 183--202 (1999; Zbl 1040.53089)] established an affine Sobolev inequality for smooth functions with compact support which is essentially stronger than the classical \(L^1\) Sobolev inequality. In the paper under review, the Sobolev-Zhang inequality is extended to functions of bounded variation and it is proved that there is equality precisely for multiples of characteristic functions of ellipsoids. These are important results. In the proof the so-called LYZ operator, which was introduced by \textit{E. Lutwak, D. Yang} and \textit{G. Zhang} [Int. Math. Res. Not. 2006, No. 1, Article ID 62987 (2006; Zbl 1110.46023)], is extended to functions of bounded variation. The paper also estalishes a geometric version of the Sobolev-Zhang inequality, namely the Petty projection inequality, for sets of finite perimeters.

\textit{G. Zhang} [J. Differ. Geom. Math. Res. The paper also estalishes a geometric version of the Sobolev-Zhang inequality, namely the Petty projection inequality, for sets of finite perimeters.
