The authors give a survey of recent results on elliptic problems in the Hörmander spaces \(H^{s, \varphi}\) with the norm \[ \langle xi \rangle^s \varphi(\langle xi \rangle)\hat{u}(\xi)\|_{L^2(\mathbb R^n)}, ~s\in \mathbb R, ~\langle xi \rangle=(1+|\xi|^2)^{1/2}, \] where \(\varphi\) is slowly varying at \(\infty\). The corresponding spaces on a smooth closed manifold \(\Gamma\), or on a smooth bounded domain \(\Omega\subset \mathbb R^n\), are also defined. The scale \(H^{s,\varphi}\) is closed with respect to interpolation with a function parameter for Hilbert scales. For elliptic pseudodifferential operators \(A\) on \(\Gamma\), or for elliptic boundary-value problems in \(\Omega\), the authors prove Fredholm properties and investigate the regularity of solutions to the equation \(Au=f\), and extend the Lions-Magenes theory. The convergence of spectral expansions is also studied.
