Some variational estimates for paraproducts in both the discrete and the continuous case are proved by employing tools of the real-variable method, including Calderón-Zygmund decomposition, sharp function techniques and interpolation arguments. These estimates are general enough to subsume previous results of \textit{P. Friz} and \textit{N. Victoir} [Lecture Notes in Mathematics 1934, 421--438 (2008; Zbl 1156.60027)].
