Let \(A\) and \(B\) be two algebras. A sequence \(\{d_{n}\}\) of linear mappings from \(A\) into \(B\) is called a higher derivation if \(d_{n}(xy)=\sum_{k=0}^{n}d_{k}(x)d_{n-k}(y)\) for each \(x,y\in A\) and each nonnegative integer \(n\). In this paper, the authors characterize all higher derivations from an algebra \(A\) into another algebra \(B\) in terms of derivations on \(B\), provided that \(d_{0}\) is onto and \(\ker(d_{0})\subseteq\ker(d_{n})\) (\(n\in{\mathbb N}\)). They show that each higher derivation is a linear combination of compositions of \(d_{0}\) and some derivations on \(B\). The importance of this work is to transfer the problems such as innerness and automatic continuity of higher derivations into the same problems concerning derivations.
