Let \(P\) be a parabolic subgroup of a general linear group over an algebraically closed field. The authors study the complement \(Z\) of the Richardson orbit in the Lie algebra of the unipotent radical of \(P\). More specifically, they classify the connected components of \(Z\) and find their codimensions. This is first done in terms of certain combinatorial structures called line diagrams and then also in terms of tableaux. It follows from the classification that there are strictly fewer irreducible components of \(Z\) than there are factors of the Levi part of \(P\).
