The paper deals with a Lotka-Volterra type system as a model for semelparous species (every individual reproduces only once in its life and dies immediately after the reproduction). The model the bifurcation of periodic orbits from a heteroclinic cycle is shown, and, based on this, it is explained why all but one subpopulation are finally extinct.
