Let \(sl_2(K)\) be the Lie algebra of the \(2\times 2\) traceless matrices over an infinite field \(K\) of characteristic different from 2 and let \(R_m=R_m(sl_2(K))\) be the relatively free algebra of rank \(m>2\) in the variety of Lie algebras generated by \(sl_2(K)\). In the paper under review the authors compute the Gelfand-Kirillov dimension of the Lie algebra \(R_m(sl_2(K))\). The main result states that \(\text{GKdim}(R_m)=3(m-1)\). The proof is based on a careful analysis of the explicit form of the Hilbert series of \(R_m\) obtained by the reviewer in the case of characteristic 0 [\textit{V. Drensky}, J. Algebra 91, 1--17 (1984; Zbl 0552.16006)]. Then the authors use a result from [\textit{S. Yu. Vasilovskii}, Algebra Logic 28, No. 5, 355--368 (1989); translation from Algebra Logika 28, No. 5, 534--554 (1989; Zbl 0707.17003)] which gives that the algebra \(R_m\) has the same basis as a vector space independently from the characteristic of the base field \(K\). The result \(\text{GKdim}(R_m)=3(m-1)\) holds also for \(m=2\). It was established in [\textit{Yu. A. Bakhturin}, Topics in modern mathematics, Petrovskii Semin. 5, 259--263 (1985); translation from Tr. Semin. Im. I. G. Petrovskogo 5, 205--208 (1979; Zbl 0664.17008)].
