The authors prove that every transcendental meromorphic map with disconnected Julia set has a weakly repelling fixed point. This result implies that the Julia set of Newton's method for finding zeros of an entire map is connected. In addition, the authors show the existence of absorbing domains for holomorphic self-maps of hyperbolic regions, whose iterates tend to a boundary point. The results imply that periodic Baker domains of Newton's method for entire maps are simply connected, thus solving an open problem stated, for instance, in [\textit{D. Schleicher}, Lect. Notes Math. 1998, 295--339 (2010; Zbl 1241.37002)].
