A commutator in the algebra \(L(X)\) of all continuous linear operators on a Banach space \(X\) is an operator of the form \(AB-BA\). A classical result of \textit{A. Wintner} [Phys. Rev., Lancaster Pa., II. Ser. 71, 738--739 (1947; Zbl 0032.13602)] asserts that the identity operator is not a commutator. The problem to identify those operators which are commutators has been investigated by several authors and the complete answer is now known, for instance, when \(X\) is a Hilbert space or when \(X=\ell_1\). The aim of the present paper is to present several results about commutators when \(X\) is a Fréchet space. It is proved, for instance, that, contrary to the Banach space situation, there exist Fréchet spaces on which all operators are commutators. | |||
