In the general framework of the problem of the analytic or meromorphic extension of the resolvent of the Laplacian across its continuous spectrum for several classes of noncompact complete Riemannian manifolds, the authors present complete results for the class of rank-two symmetric spaces \(X\) which are direct products \(X_{1} \times X_{2}\) of two Riemannian symmetric spaces \(X_{1}\) and \(X_{2}\) of the noncompact type and rank one. The authors present the motivation for their study, recall basic definitions and constructions and discuss the case where the resolvent of the Laplacian of \(X\) can be lifted to a holomorphic function on a Riemann surface (namely when at least one of the two spaces is isomorphic to a real hyperbolic space of odd dimension) as well as the other cases, where the resolvent of the Laplacian of \(X\) admits a singular meromorphic lift. The extensions are obtained by considering the resolvent as an operator acting on a suitable dense subspace of \(L^{2}(X)\), the Hilbert space of square-integrable functions on the considered Riemannian manifold \(X\), rather than on the whole of \(L^{2}(X)\). Even if the results obtained here are the simplest cases of higher rank Riemannian symmetric spaces of the noncompact type, they present some interesting new phenomena and the authors express the hope that they will shed some light on the general case. | |||
