Let \((M,g)\) be a compact 2-dimensional Riemannian manifold without boundary. Let \(\Delta\) be the Laplace-Beltrami operator. The authors extend previous work of \textit{M. D. Blair} and \textit{C. There exist positive constants \(C=C(M,g)\) and \(\lambda_0=\lambda_0(M,g)\) so that if \(\gamma\subset M\) is any geodesic segment which has total length 1 and if \(\Delta e_\lambda=\lambda^2e_\lambda\) is any eigenfunction of the Laplacian for \(\lambda>\lambda_0\), then: \smallbreak\noindent 1. If \(M\) has nonpositive scalar curvature, then \[ \|e_\lambda\|_{L^4(\gamma)}\leq C\lambda^{\frac14}(\log\log\lambda)^{-\frac18}\|e_\lambda\|_{L^2(M)}\,. \] \smallbreak\noindent 2. If \(M\) has constant negative scalar curvature, then \[ \|e_\lambda\|_{L^4(\gamma)}\leq C\lambda^{\frac14}(\log\lambda)^{-\frac14}\|e_\lambda\|_{L^2(M)}. \] The first estimate follows from an improved local restriction estimate and by interpolating using results of \textit{J.-G.
