The author gives an estimate of the eigenvalues of the Laplacian of one compact negatively curved surface of genus \(\gamma\geq 2\) in terms of another such surface, based on and extending a result by \textit{P. Buser} [Geometry and spectra of compact Riemann surfaces. Reprint of the 1992 original. Boston, MA: Birkhäuser (2010; Zbl 1239.32001)]. More precisely, let \(M_i\) (\(i=1,2\)) denote two compact orientable and negatively curved surfaces of the same genus \(\gamma\geq 2\) and the same area, so that their scalar curvatures \(R_i\) satisfy the same estimate \(\alpha<R_i<\beta<0\). Further consider the Riemann surfaces \(N_i\) (\(i=1,2\)), obtained by rescaling the metrics of \(M_i\) so that they have average scalar curvature \(-2\); and then the Riemann surfaces \(S_i\) (\(i=1,2\)), obtained from \(N_i\) as limiting surfaces of the normalized Ricci flow. Then (Thm 1.1) the eigenvalues \(\lambda_n(M_i)\) of the Laplacian on \(M_i\) satisfy an inequality \[ e^{-({\alpha\over r}+{r\over\beta}+4\delta)}\lambda_n(M_2) \leq \lambda_n(M_1) \leq e^{{\alpha\over r}+{r\over\beta}+4\delta}\lambda_n(M_2), \] where \(\delta\) denotes the distance of \(S_1\) and \(S_2\) in Teichmüller space and \(r\) the average scalar curvatures of \(M_i\).
