Let \(G\) be a finitely generated profinite group and let \(\mu(H,G)\) denote the Möbius function, where \(H\) is a finite index subgroup of \(G\), defined by \(\mu(G,G)=1\) and \(\sum_{H\leq K}\mu(K,G)=0\) if \(H\lneqq G\). In this paper it is shown that \(\sum_H\mu(H,G)/|G:H|^s\), where \(H\) ranges over all open subgroups, converges absolutely in some right half plane of the complex plane, provided the nonabelian crowns of \(G\) have bounded rank. This verifies in certain cases a conjecture of \textit{A. Mann} [Forum Math. 8, No. 4, 429-459 (1996; Zbl 0852.20019)]. For example, from this theorem, \(\sum_H\mu(H,G)/|G:H|^s\) converges absolutely in some right half plane provided \(G\) is one of the following types: (1) a finitely generated virtually prosoluble group, a result obtained by the author [in J. Group Theory 10, No. 5, 633-639 (2007; Zbl 1130.20027)]; (2) certain arithmetic groups, a result obtained by \textit{A. Mann} [in Int. J. Algebra Comput. 15, No. 5-6, 1053-1059 (2005; Zbl 1098.20025)]; (3) a group with polynomial subgroup growth or (4) a finitely generated adelic group. | |||
