For a topological space \(X\), the authors consider two properties \((a)\) and \((pp)\), introduced by M.V. Matveev in 1997. The space \(X\) is said to be an \((a)\)-space if for each open cover \(\mathcal{U} \) of \(X\) and each dense subset \(D\) of \(X\) there exists a closed discrete set \(A \in D\) such that \(St(A,\mathcal{U})=X\), where \(St(A,\mathcal{U})\) is the union of all elements from \(\mathcal{U}\) intersecting \(A\). The space \(X\) is said to be a \((pp)\)-space if for each open cover \(\mathcal{U} \) of \(X\) there is an open refinement \(\mathcal{V} \) of \(\mathcal{U} \) such that if \( x_{V} \in V\) for each \( V \in \mathcal{V}\), then the set \( {x_{V}: V\in \mathcal{V}}\) is closed and discrete in \(X\). In 1999, the last author defined star selection principles (star-Menger space, strongly star-Menger space). In the paper under review, selective versions of \((a)\)-spaces and \((pp)\)-spaces are defined, and their relationships with other covering properties are studied. The authors investigate also when the Alexandroff duplicate \(AD(X)\) of the space \(X\) has the considered properties.
