\textit{M. J. Wonenburger} showed that every automorphism of a Cayley division algebra C over a real closed field is a product of two involutory automorphisms [J. Algebra 12, 441-452 (1969; Zbl 0177.057)]. In the present paper the authors prove that the same is true for split Cayley algebras.
