Let \({\mathfrak g}\) denote a semisimple Lie algebra, \(U_ h{\mathfrak g}\) its quantum universal enveloping algebra as a Hopf algebra over the formal power series in h with base field \({\mathbb{C}}\). Using the possibility of extending \(U_ h{\mathfrak g}\) in the case \({\mathfrak g}=sl_ 2\) by a Weyl element and the known explicit formula of the R-matrix in that case, an extension of \(U_ h{\mathfrak g}\), \({\mathfrak g}\) semisimple, by \(sl_ 2\)-Weyl elements corresponding to the simple roots of \({\mathfrak g}\) is defined. By a change of phase the Weyl elements turn out to make up the quantized Weyl group (Theorem 2 and Lemma 5). Conjugation by those elements is shown to define Lusztig's automorphisms of the underlying algebra of \(U_ h{\mathfrak g}\), while the coalgebra structure is changed in a prescribed way (Theorem 4) There are formulas for the universal R-matrix of \(U_ h{\mathfrak g}\) (Theorem 3), i.e. solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation.
