The authors describe a nice, neighborly 15-vertex triangulation of the 3- dimensional torus \(S^ 1\times S^ 1\times S^ 1\) whose symmetry group is the affine group \(A(1,{\mathbb{Z}}_{15})\). It is obtained as a quotient (by a translation group) of the rhombidodecahedral tesselation of \(E^ 3\) where each of the rhombidodecahedra is subdivided into 24 tetrahedra by an additional vertex in the centre. The symmetry group is just a quotient of the two crystallographic groups in 3-space, which preserve the tesselation. The authors emphasize the analogy to the well-known construction of the 7-vertex triangulation of the 2-dimensional torus as a quotient of the triangular tesselation of the plane by a translation group.
