A modulus of smoothness on the unit sphere (Q5943732)

For functions on \(S^{d-1}\) (the unit sphere in \(\mathbb{R}^d\)), and, in particular, for \(f \in L_p(S^{d-1})\), \(0<p\leq\infty\), new simple moduli of smoothness are defined. Sharp Marchaud-type inequalities are proved which relate different orders of these moduli. Inverse theorems using best approximation by spherical harmonics of order smaller than \(n\) are obtained for \(L_p(S^{d-1})\), \(1\leq p \leq\infty\). The introduced moduli lead to sharper results than those now available for the known moduli on \(L_p(S^{d-1})\).
