Let \(T\) be a bounded linear operator of a \(\text{JB}^*\)-triple \({\mathcal E}\) to a Hilbert space \({\mathcal H}\). As observed by the author, the second transpose \(T^{**}\) of \(T\) does not necessarily attain its norm (a fact that was taken to be true in the proof of Theorem 1.3 of the paper by \textit{T. Barton} and \textit{Y. Friedman} [J. Lond. Math. Soc. (2) 36, 513--523 (1987; Zbl 0652.46039)]. However, the set of all operators \(T\in BL({\mathcal E},{\mathcal H})\) such that \(T^{**}\) attains its norm is norm dense in \(BL({\mathcal E},{\mathcal H})\). This leads the author to restate the theorem of Barton and Friedman and extend it to the more general real case, as follows: Given a real \(\text{JB}^*\)-triple \({\mathcal E}\), and a real Hilbert space \({\mathcal H}\), then the set of those bounded linear operators \(T\) from \({\mathcal E}\) to \({\mathcal H}\) such that there exists a norm one functional \(\varphi\in{\mathcal E}^*\) and a corresponding pre-Hilbertian semi-norm \(\|.\|_{\varphi}\) on \({\mathcal E}\) such that \(\| T(x)\|\leq \sqrt{2}\| T\|\,\| x\|_{\varphi}\) for all \(x\in{\mathcal E}\), is norm dense in \(BL({\mathcal E},{\mathcal H})\).
