Consider the lattice dynamical system \[ \begin{aligned} {dS_j\over dt} &= d(S_{j+1}- 2S_j+ S_{j-1})-\beta S_jI_j,\\ {dI_j\over dt} &= (I_{j+1}- 2I_j+ I_{j-1})+(\beta S_j- \gamma)I_j\end{aligned}\tag{\(*\)} \] with \(j\in\mathbb{Z}\), \(d\), \(\beta\), \(\gamma\) are positive constants. System \((*)\) is the classical Kermack-McKendrick epidemic model: \(S_j(t)\) is the susceptible population and \(I_j(t)\) the infected population at niche \(j\) at time \(t\). To given \(S^*>0\), a traveling wave solution of system \((*)\) is a solution of \((*)\) of the type \[ (S_j(t), I_j(t))= (S(\xi), I(\xi)),\quad\xi= j+ct \] such that \(0<S(\xi)< S^*\), \(I(\xi)>0\) for all \(\xi\) and \(S(-\infty)= S^*\), \(I(\pm\infty)= 0\). \(c\) is the wave speed. The existence of a traveling wave is equivalent to the existence of a solution to the boundary value problem \[ \begin{aligned} c\,{dS\over d\xi} &= d[S(\xi+1)- 2S(\xi)+ S(\xi-1)-\beta SI,\\ c\, {dI\over d\xi} &= I(\xi+1)- 2I(\xi)+ I(\xi-1)+ (\beta S-\gamma)I,\\ (S,I)(-\infty)& = (S^*,0),\;I(+\infty)= 0.\end{aligned}\tag{\(**\)} \] To given \(S^*>\gamma/\beta\), the critical speed \(c^*\) is defined by \[ c^*= \text{inf}_{\lambda>0} {(e^\lambda+ \overline e^\lambda- 2)+ (\beta S^*-\gamma)\over \lambda}. \] It is known that \((**)\) has a solution for \(c>c^*\) and no solution for \(c<c^*\) under some conditions. The author proves the existence of a traveling wave of \((*)\) with \(c=c^*\).
