The aim of the paper under review is to construct Green functions for polynomial skew products in \(\mathbb C^2\). A polynomial skew product is a polynomial map of the form \(f(z,w)=(p(z), q(z,w))\) where \(p\) is a polynomial of degree \(\delta\geq 2\) and \(q(z,w)=b(z)w^d+\ldots\) is a polynomial in \(w\) of degree \(d\geq 2\) with polynomial coefficients in \(z\). The polynomial skew product is ``non-degenerate'' if \(b(z)\) is constant. The dynamics of \(f\) can be read via the dynamics of \(p\) and the dynamics on the fibers, since \(f^{\circ n}(z,w)=(p^{\circ n}(z), Q^{n}_z(w))\) where \(Q_z^n(w)=q_{p^{\circ n-1}(z)}\circ \ldots q_z\) where \(q_z(w)=q(z,w)\). Therefore, since the Green function of \(p\) always exists, the Green function of \(f\) exists provided \(G_z(w):=\lim_{n\to \infty}\lambda^{-n}\log^+|Q_z^n(w)|\) exists, where \(\lambda=\max\{\delta, d\}\). In his previous paper [Discrete Contin. Dyn. Syst. 31, No. 3, 985--996 (2011; Zbl 1236.32011)] on non-degenerate polynomial skew products, the author proved the existence and regularity properties of the Green function introducing a nonnegative rational number \(\alpha\) to \(f\) in such a way that \(f\) extends to an algebraically stable map on the weighted projective space corresponding to \(\alpha\). In this paper, he generalizes his results to the case of degenerate polynomial skew products, still using weights. In this case, the rational number \(\alpha\) associated to \(f\) can be negative. Again, one can define a weighted Green function \(G_f^\alpha\). If \(\delta>d\) the author proves that \(G_f^\alpha=\alpha G_p\) (here \(G_p\) is the Green function of \(p\)), while, if \(\delta<d\), then \(G_f^\alpha=G_f=G_z\) exists, and it is continuous and pluriharmonic on a suitable set \(A_p\times \mathbb C\) (associated to the dynamics of \(f\)). Moreover, for some special values of the parameter \(\alpha\), he gets more precise results on \(G_z\) and \(G_f^\alpha\). In case \(d=\delta\) the situation is completely different and, in the degenerate case, roughly speaking, the author proves that \(G_z=\infty\) on \(A_f\) and it is bounded by \(G_p\) outside. In this case, he also introduces other types of suitable Green functions.
