The author studies the global well-posedness of the Cauchy problem for the equations of two-dimensional incompressible isotropic elastodynamics. A similar global existence result in the Lagrangian coordinates formulation was recently obtained by \textit{Z. Lei} [Commun. Pure Appl. Math. 69, No. 11, 2072--2106 (2016; Zbl 1351.35216)]. This paper aims at improvement of understanding the behavior of solutions, and also at presenting a different approach to study two-dimensional nonlinear wave equations in frequency space. By employing a modified energy method to derive the energy estimate and a Fourier transform method with a suitable choice of a \(Z\)-norm to derive a sharp \(L^\infty\)-estimate, the author establishes the global existence and the asymptotic behavior of smooth solutions for sufficiently small smooth initial data in the Eulerian coordinates formulation.
