Van de Craats and Bosch present a textbook about basics in mathematics (Grundwissen Mathematik), dedicated to students starting at graduate schools or universities. As the title suggests the authors aim at providing mathematical tools and techniques prior to the regular courses in mathematics at the undergraduate level. Therefore, van de Craats and Bosch offer their book to pupil and future students who feel uncomfortable and unsafe with mathematical issues on the one hand and who think about themselves of having knowledge gaps in basic mathematics. The book may serve as a refresher and can be used as a private study. The structure of the book (except for the last three chapters) is unique in its structure: on the left sides are exercises, and on the right sides are brief theoretical explanations. The topics covered are numbers, elementary algebra, sequences, quadratic equations, elementary geometry, functions, differential- and integral calculus. The final three chapters present additional background information mainly related to differential calculus. At the end of the book, answers to the exercises are given as well as a collection of the formulas used in the book.
