Exchange rings generated by their units. (Q884905)

Let \(R\) be an exchange ring with primitive factors Artinian. In this paper the author proves that there exists \(u\in U(R)\) such that \(1_R\pm u\in U(R)\), iff for any \(a\in R\), there exists \(u\in U(R)\) such that \(a\pm u\in U(R)\). Furthermore, the author proves that, for any \(A\in M_n(R)\) (\(n\geq 2\)), there exists \(U\in\text{GL}_n(R)\) such that \(A\pm U\in\text{GL}_n(R)\).
