This paper has shown that the coexistence of competing species causes the decrease of their resource consumption, which may make possible the stable coexistence of any number of exclusively competitive species. From this result, we can draw two conclusions. (a) In a habitat composed of several (possibly different) patches, not only the number of patches but also the existence of suitable (non-zero) interpatch migration might play some role in the actual diversity of species. (b) If a continuous habitat is composed of two different neighboring domains, species diversity may be observed around the border between them.
