Let \(C\) be a smooth projective curve of genus \(g \geq 2\) over an algebraically closed field \(k\). By results of \textit{P. E. Newstead} [Math. Ann. 215, 251--268 (1975; Zbl 0288.14003)], completed later by \textit{A. King} and \textit{A. Schofield} [Indag. Math., New Ser. 10, No. 4, 519--535 (1999; Zbl 1043.14502)], the moduli schemes of stable vector bundles over \(C\) of fixed rank \(r\) and determinant \(L\) are rational provided \(r\) and \(deg(L)\) are coprime. Here the authors study a similar question for moduli stacks \(Sympl_{2n,L}\) of symplectic vector bundles over \(C\), i.e. rank \(r = 2n\) bundles \(E\) over \(C\) with a non-degenerate symplectic form \(E \otimes E \rightarrow L\). By Theorem 5.2, the main result of the paper, if \(\deg(E) = n.\deg(L)\) is odd then under very general conditions \(Sympl_{2n,L}\) is rational as a \(G_m\)-stack.
