[The articles of this volume will not be indexed individually.] The present volume is based on the lectures given during the advanced course on numerical methods in geomechanics including constitutive modelling organized by ICMS, Udine, Italy during 10-14 July 1989. It presents a review of the current state and of up-to-date developments of a wide range of topics such as: (i) Modelling and testing: Implementation of numerical models and their application in practice; (ii) Mechanics of partially saturated porous media; (iii) Dynamic analysis of saturated nonlinear media; (iv) Implementation of modern constitutive laws and analysis of field problems; (v) Numerical modelling of tunnels; (vi) Some applications of mathematical programming in geomechanics, and (vii) Numerical analysis for the interpretation of field measurements in geomechanics. The volume contains a wealth of information useful to students, researchers and practicing engineers.
