The authors comment on the notion of Boolean differentiation, first introduced by \textit{S. B. Akers} [J. Soc. Ind. Appl. Math. 7, 487-498 (1959; Zbl 0114.06502)], discussing some of the applications to fault detection and reliability of switching circuits. Calculation formulas concerning monotone functions and examples on Carnot maps are given for special kinds of derivatives: single, double, twofold, and total Boolean differences [see also \textit{D. Bochmann} and \textit{C. Posthoff}, Binäre dynamische Systeme, Oldenbourg Verlag, München/Akademie-Verlag, Berlin (1981; Zbl 0509.94026)].
