This work compares the results of a volume-averaging approach with a large-time large-Peclet number stochastic approach. The two approaches estimate exactly the same macrodispersion coefficients. For large Peclet numbers, the classic stochastic result for longitudinal macrodispersivity can be obtained numerically using the volume averaging method. The result is significant because the volume-averaging approach provides an efficient way to compute macrodispersion coefficients. The method is applied to a simplified representation of the Borden aquifer.
