The goal of the paper under review is to investigate the Auslander-Reiten quiver of a \({\mathcal P}_1\)-hereditary Artin algebra. Such algebras, introduced earlier by the first author, are defined as follows. Let \(\Lambda\) be an Artin algebra and \({\mathcal P}_0,\dots,{\mathcal P}_n,\dots,{\mathcal P}_\infty\) the preprojective (called postprojective in the paper) partition of the indecomposable \(\Lambda\)-modules in the sense of Auslander and Smalø. Then \(\Lambda\) is said to be \({\mathcal P}_1\)-hereditary if it has the following property: if \(C\) is a module in \({\mathcal P}_1\), then every indecomposable \(X\) having a nonzero morphism \(X\to C\) is in \({\mathcal P}_0\cup{\mathcal P}_1\). For technical reasons, one needs two more classes of algebras. The first class, formed by all hereditary algebras, is denoted \({\mathcal H}_0\). The other class, denoted \({\mathcal H}_1\), is similar to the class of \({\mathcal P}_1\)-hereditary algebras, except that the condition \(C\in{\mathcal P}_1\) is replaced by the condition \(C\in{\mathcal P}_0\cup{\mathcal P}_1\) and the algebra is not allowed to be hereditary. The main result can now be stated as follows. Theorem. Let \(\Lambda\) be a \({\mathcal P}_1\)-hereditary Artin algebra and \(\mathcal C\) an Auslander-Reiten component of \(\Lambda\). If \(\mathcal C\) does not contain projective modules, then \(\mathcal C\) is preinjective or quasi-serial or obtained from a quasi-serial translation quiver by coray insertion. If \(\mathcal C\) contains projective modules, then \(\mathcal C\) is postprojective or there is an Artin algebra \(\Lambda'\) in \({\mathcal H}_0\cup{\mathcal H}_1\) such that \(\mathcal C\) is obtained from a finite number of Auslander-Reiten components of \(\Lambda'\) which are either preinjective or postprojective by gluing together some simple injective modules with some simple projective modules.
