In this paper the authors consider a system of parabolic equations due to \textit{Eguchi} et al. [Mat. Res. Soc. Symp. Proc. 21, 589-594 (1984) (per rev.)] which describes simultaneous phase separation and order disorder transition. Eguchi's model is given by \[ u_t = \Delta (-\Delta +2u +uv^2), \quad v_t = \beta \Delta v + \alpha v(a^2-u^2-b^2 v^2), \qquad x\in \Omega, \] where \(u(x,t)\) is the local concentration of the solute atoms and \(v(x,t)\) is the local degree of order; \(a\), \(b\), \(\alpha\), \(\beta\) are positive constants. Neumann boundary conditions on \(\partial \Omega\) and initial data in \(H^2(\Omega)\) are prescribed. The authors compare the Eguchi model to other PDE models of such phenomena (e. g. that of \textit{J. D. Cahn} and \textit{A. Novick-Cohen} [J. Stat. Phys. 76, 877-909 (1994; Zbl 0840.35110)]) and prove global existence of solutions (Theorem 1.2), using well-established methods: contraction mapping principle to prove local existence and then a priori estimates and the Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequality to extend the solution to arbitrary time \(T\).
