    The authors study the following problems: \begin{align*} u_{tt} - \Delta u + u^3 & = 0, \quad u=u(t,x), \quad t \in \mathbb{R}, \quad x \in \mathbb{T}^2 \\ u_{tt} + \Delta^2 u + u^3 & = 0, \quad u=u(t,x), \quad t \in \mathbb{R}, \quad x \in \mathbb{T}^2. \end{align*} They prove the existence of special beating solutions, namely solutions that exhibit transfer of energy between Fourier modes.
