The following general notions of projectivity are introduced. Let \( \mathcal{X}\) and \( \mathcal{Y}\) be classes of unital \(C^*\)-algebras. A unital \(C^*\)-algebra \(\mathcal A\) is \( \mathcal{X}$-$\mathcal {Y}\) projective if, for every \(\mathcal B \in \mathcal X\), \(\mathcal M \in \mathcal Y\), for every unital surjective \(*\)-homomorphism \(\pi: \mathcal B \rightarrow \mathcal M\) and for every unital \(*\)-homomorphism \(\phi: \mathcal A \rightarrow \mathcal{M}\), there exists a unital \(*\)-homomorphism \(\psi: \mathcal A \rightarrow \mathcal{B}\) such that \(\pi \circ \psi=\phi\). Similar notions are defined for the non-unital case. The term \(C^*\)-\(W^*\) projective is used when \(\mathcal X\) is the class of \(C^*\)-algebras and \(\mathcal Y\) the class of von Neumann algebras, and the terms \(C^*\)-\(C^*\) projective, \(W^*\)-\(C^*\) projective and \(W^*\)-\(W^*\) projective are defined similarly. The authors study projectivity properties with the main focus on commutative \(C^*\)-algebras. They characterize the unital separable \(C^*\)-\(W^*\) projective \(C^*\)-algebras and show that tensoring such an algebra with matrices preserves \(C^*\)-\(W^*\) projectivity. Then, they apply these results to lifting problems of order zero maps. They show that all separable subhomogeneous \(C^*\)-algebras are \(W^*\)-\(W^*\) projective. Questions about \(W^*\)-\(C^*\) projectivity are also discussed.
