In an earlier paper [ibid. 108, 213-230 (1988; Zbl 0679.15025)], the authors classified \(n \times n\) complex Hermitian matrices under congruence transformation by matrices of the partitioned form \(T=\left( \begin{matrix} T_{11} & T_{12} \\ 0 & T_{22} \end{matrix} \right)\), where \(T_{11}\) is \(m\times m\) for fixed \(m\). Here they impose the additional conditions that \(T_{11}\), \(T_{22}\) be unitary. The resulting normal form matrices are like the previous ones, except that certain unit matrices are now replaced by diagonal matrices whose entries are unique up to order of appearance. The results are applied to generalize, or simplify the proofs of, various results on the inertia and signature of Hermitian matrices.
