Mori dream spaces are projective varieties which are particularly well behaved from the point of view of the minimal model program. In particular they have finitely generated class groups \(\mathrm{Cl}(X)\) and finitely generated Cox rings \(\mathcal R (X):=\bigoplus _{L\in \mathrm{Cl}(X)}H^0(X,L)\). They were introduced by \textit{Y. Hu} and \textit{S. Keel} [Mich. Math. J. 48, 331--348 (2000; Zbl 1077.14554)] who characterized Mori dream spaces as those projective varieties which can be written as a GIT quotient of the spectrum of its Cox ring. In this paper the authors study a generalization of Mori dream spaces to stacks. It is not the case that Mori dream stacks are always given as a quotient of the spectrum of the Cox ring, however the authors provide a criterion when this is true and they characterize smooth toric Deligne-Mumford stacks in terms of the Cox ring.
