[The articles of this volume will not be indexed individually. The preceding conference (15th, 1996) has been announced (see Zbl 0890.76002).] The conference provides scientific and technical information in the field of computational fluid dynamics. The five main topics (numerical methods, incompressible flows and turbulence, compressible flows, schemes and methods of their analysis, complex flows) are introduced by invited lectures. The first section on aspects of Cartesian mesh methods contains communications on unstructured meshes, hybrid-Cartesian grids, quasi-isometric grids, unstructured and highly non-smooth grids. Compressible flow calculations for industrial application, airfoil design problems with rapid convergence, three-dimensional turbulent transonic flows and a Japanese supersonic inverse wing design method are also presented in this section. The second section on incompressible flows and turbulence introduces a numerical study of near-wall coherent structures in turbulent boundary layers. Further communications are concerned with subsonic turbulent shear flows, swirling flows and spherical Taylor-Couette flows. The third invited lecture on efficient computation of compressible flows is followed by discussions on different schemes for the simulation of compressible Navier Stokes-equations, unsteady flows and magnetohydrodynamics. The fourth section on schemes and analysis methods discusses mainly two-phase flows. In the last topic on complex flows different fields are treated, such as hypersonic aerodynamics in continuum-transition regime, flame fronts including turbulent flames in supernovae, reacting and radiating flows, condensation and non-Newtonian flows. The contributions of this volume are of high standard and give a balanced presentation of the current research in this area.
