Consider the ``\(q\)-Lamé'' difference operator \(L\) in one complex variable \[ L\psi(\lambda)={\theta(\lambda-\gamma m,\tau)\over \theta (\lambda,\tau)}\psi(\lambda+\gamma)+{\theta(\lambda+\gamma m,\tau) \over\theta (\lambda, \tau)}\varphi(\lambda-\tau) \] where \(\theta\) is the first Jacobi function, \(\gamma\) and \(\tau\) are complex parameters in the upper halfplane and \(m\) is a nonnegative integer. The algebra of differential operators that commute with the Lamé operator is isomorphic to the algebra of polynomials on an affine hyperelliptic curve called the spectral curve of the differential operator \(l\) conjugate to the operator \[ -d^2/d^2+m(m-1)p(\lambda)+ \text{const}, \] where \(p\) is the Weierstrass doubly periodic function with periods 1 and \(\tau\). The authors study the difference operators commuting with \(L\). There exist a difference operator \(N\) of degree \(2m+1\) and of the length \(4m+2\) such that the algebra \(A\) of operators commuting with \(L\) is generated by \(L\) and \(N\). They compute the eigenvalues of the operators under consideration and obtain ``the difference Galois group'' analog to the differential case.
