The main theorem is that if \(G\) is a finite \(p\)-group and \(k\) is a field of characteristic \(p\), then the May spectral sequence converging to \(H^*G\) collapses after a finite number of steps. This is proved by noting that the \(E_2\)-term contains a Noetherian subring \(R\) consisting of permanent cycles, such that \(E_2\) is finitely generated as an \(R\)-module. The existence of such an \(R\) is proved by induction on the order of \(G\), utilizing a certain central cyclic subgroup of \(G\).
